March Is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month

Each year, March is recognized as National Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM). The purpose of PGAM is to increase public awareness of problem gambling and the availability of prevention, treatment, and recovery services.

Although gambling may be a pastime for many, it can become addictive and lead to gambling disorder. The Office of Problem Gambling (OPG) estimates that more than one million Californians are currently affected by problem gambling. If left untreated, gambling behaviors can devastate the lives of gamblers and those around them including loved ones, friends, colleagues, and communities.

Problem gambling affects both mental and physical well-being. Research has found strong links between problem gambling and other health conditions, including anxiety and mood disorders, substance use disorders, and psychotic spectrum disorders. Lack of awareness about problem gambling can prevent people from seeking help. For those who are experiencing negative effects of gambling, life may feel hopeless. However, focusing on wellness and recovery is possible at any stage, even in the most severe cases.

The California Gambling Education and Treatment Services (CalGETS) program provides no-cost, confidential treatment options for both people who gamble and their affected loved ones. CalGETS services are available to all California residents, age 18 and over, and can be accessed in person or virtually, in multiple languages including English, Spanish, and Chinese.

CalGETS services can be reached by texting SUPPORT to 53342, chatting at problemgambling.ca.gov, or calling 1-800-GAMBLER.

PGAM posters and Responsible Gambling Guidelines brochures are available at problemgambling.ca.gov. Help share the message that there is hope for recovery at any stage by downloading and displaying these materials in your place of business. For more information, please email OPG@cdph.ca.gov.
