Vietnamese-American Community Heritage Quilt is an art project by VIVO Foundation under a grant from Santa Clara County History Grant.

            Completed in 2023 after three years of designing and tedious needlework, the Quilt exemplifies the community spirit in collaborated efforts to realize this historic artwork. The first of its kind, the Quilt is a major history art piece depicting Vietnam history and establishment of Vietnamese community in the US using the deep-rooted American art craft technique of quilting. Beyond painting and sculpture, the Quilt, 9ft by 18ft in size, is a breakthrough in Vietnamese artwork using American popular quilting folk art.

            This Heritage Quilt is a celebration of Vietnamese community in the US, particularly in Santa Clara County where more than hundred fifty thousand people, including thousands of boat people, find new home in freedom and democracy, after escaping war torn Vietnam. It also recognizes the long history and deeply rooted culture and traditions of Vietnam from the legendary of Hundred Eggs, through the upheaval of history with great heroic efforts to fight off invaders and uprising for independence and survival.   

            This quilt project is made possible with a grant from Santa Clara County History Department. It also represents the County’s leadership and dedicated service to the community in its effort to assimilate into the mainstream.

            The 18-panel quilt will also serve as an ingenious learning tool to students of history in discovering the intricacies of Vietnam History, and the just cause of the establishment of the Vietnamese community in the US. It will help bring the people closer together and we all can celebrate America in community spirit in an artful way.

            Vietnamese-American Community Heritage Quilt là một công trình nghệ thuật của tổ chức VIVO Foundation dưới sự tài trợ của Santa Clara County History Grant.

            Hoàn thành vào năm 2023 sau ba năm thiết kế và khâu vá tỉ mỉ, tấm tranh vải Quilt thể hiện tinh thần cộng đồng trong những nỗ lực hợp tác để biến dự án nghệ thuật lịch sử này thành hiện thực. Là công trình đầu tiên thuộc thể loại tranh thêu ráp vải, tấm Quilt là một tác phẩm nghệ thuật lịch sử cỡ lớn nhằm miêu tả lịch sử Việt Nam và sự hình thành cộng đồng người Việt tại Hoa Kỳ bằng cách sử dụng kỹ thuật thủ công tranh thêu ráp vải nghệ thuật lâu đời của Mỹ. Ngoài hội họa và điêu khắc, tấm Quilt với kích thước 2.5m x 5m,  là một bước xuyên phá trong nghệ thuật Việt Nam sử dụng kỹ thuật dân gian thêu vải ráp phổ biến của Mỹ.

            Tấm tranh thêu ráp vải truyền thống này nhằm vinh danh cộng đồng người Việt tại Hoa Kỳ, đặc biệt là tại Quận Santa Clara, nơi có hơn 150,000 người, trong đó có hàng ngàn thuyền nhân, tìm đến quê hương mới trong tự do và dân chủ, sau khi thoát khỏi cuộc chiến tranh tàn phá Việt Nam. Đồng thời ghi nhận lịch sử lâu đời và truyền thống văn hóa, cội nguồn sâu xa của dân tộc Việt Nam từ truyền thuyết Trăm trứng, qua những biến động của lịch sử với những công lao anh dũng đánh đuổi giặc ngoại xâm và khởi nghĩa giành độc lập, trường tồn cho dân tộc.

            Dự án tranh thêu ráp vải này được thực hiện với sự tài trợ từ Sở Lịch sử Quận Santa Clara. Nó cũng thể hiện sự lãnh đạo của Quận hạt và tận tâm phục vụ cho cộng đồng trong nỗ lực hòa nhập vào dòng chính.

            Bộ tranh thêu ráp vải gồm18 bức tranh cũng là một công cụ giáo dục tuyệt vời giúp cho học sinh lịch sử khám phá những điều kỳ diệu của Lịch sử Việt Nam, và chính nghĩa của sự hiện hữu cộng đồng người Việt tại Hoa Kỳ. Nó sẽ giúp đem mọi người lại gần với nhau và tất cả chúng ta có thể vinh danh nước Mỹ trong tinh thần đòan kết cộng đồng qua nghệ thuật.

            VIVO xin bày tỏ lòng biết ơn chân thành đến ban lãnh đạo của Quận Hạt Santa Clara trong việc hỗ trợ dự án tranh thêu ráp vải di sản cộng đồng lịch sử này.
